Welcome Back readers! It’s been a long break. So many changes. Some were good and some not so good. Today, I want to focus on the good. I’m a mom again! Uh…a dog mom. Don’t get too excited. This was not something we planned, but it was definitely something we always wanted. Our children love animals and it’s always been our goal to get them a pet. The process for us doing this had been slow. Really slow. We wanted to have some things in place first because pets are a lot of work. Especially if you get a small puppy or kitten. They need a lot of attention and a lot of training. I must admit I wasn’t sure I was up to it, but I knew that if we could do it, I would want it done once we bought a house. So, we did.
We bought a house! Such an exciting time and frustrating, but totally rewarding. I will have to share that experience with you some time (shameless plug for one of my future posts). Anyway, we bought the house and now I felt comfortable getting a pet. A dog specifically. Everything just kind of fell into place for us with our dogs. Yes, you read that correctly, dogs. We have two. They came as a pair because they are brother and sister. They are adults but still pretty young and already trained. I don’t think I could have picked them better myself. Not only are they sweet and cuddly, they like to run and have fun. Which is great for our children.
Even with all of this, it was an adjustment. Just like with any new change comes adjustments. This was certainly one for us. The children realized how much responsibility comes with taking care of a pet. They were not fond of it at first, but they eventually came around. Which is all I can ask for. This was a great moment for me. I was able to teach them new things and actually speak to them about responsibilities There are so many things that go on daily in our lives which we either step up to handle or shrink away from. Teaching my children to step up to their new responsibilities was not fun. So. Much. Whining!!
I can say, now, that it has certainly paid off for us to have these two dogs with us. Not only have they brought joy and laughter into home, they have also brought new lessons that will last a lifetime. You can’t buy that type of curriculum anywhere. Sorry about that. I’m also in full homeschool mode. Curriculum is always on the brain. Anyway, welcome back again readers. We have so much in store for you this year and we can’t wait to share it all. Happy Monday!!
Also…since I am a new dog owner, I would love some advice on a few topics. So if you have anything you would like to recommend, please add it in the comments.
I have 2 Cockapoos. Bella and Boomer.
What do you use to help clean ears?
Do you actually brush their teeth or are the Minties just something I can use?
Do I have to be worried about them scratching themselves? I’ve checked for fleas and haven’t found anything. So they just itch sometimes right?
How do you get them to stop eating the grass? Does it ever stop?
their teeth CAN be brushed, if they allow. I use the pet toothpaste, and those little finger toothbrushes. I think it helps.
what do you mean by, “scratching themselves”? do you use the tick med? I would recommend that for SURE!! they need it. to many tics around. but maybe that is not what you meant….
check out the grass thing, mine always eat it, but it could mean they need a different food. I just try and stop mine-it sometimes upsetls their stomachs.
I dont’ know much about your type of breed, maybe they need more baths?
sooo exciting! all your news.

They do have tick meds, so I don’t know if they just itch or something but them. It’s mainly Boomer. Bella was scratching her ear so we made sure to clean it out and she has been fine ever since. Yeah, mainly Bella eats the grass but then it upsets her stomach. I just switched there food so maybe I should give it another week?
Okay, i had been using Minties, but I will grab some toothpaste and see how that works. Thank you so much Tami!!

Because they are small dogs brushing their teeth is a must! Target, amazon and pet stores all carry dog tooth paste and tooth brushes. Also it’s allergy season they may just have sensitive skin try an oatmeal bath once a week if that doesn’t help you can try Benadryl children’s liquid depending on their weight my 9.5 lbs dog gets 3 ml if that helps. My dog has environmental and food allergies so I just give her Benadryl once a day! And for their ears they make a cleaner which they also sell at target and pet stores.

Awesome! Thank you. I thought about allergies, but then I laugh whenever I think about it because you know…dogs and allergies. I never thought they could get them, but I stand corrected. Which would make sense cause Boomer sneezes a lot. I have some ear wipes I bought for them, but I’m wondering if I should get the liquid to flush out their ears ?? Thank you!!

Typically if a Dog is eating grass they have an upset stomach or they want to get whatever is in their stomach, out. (Grass makes them throw up eventually)

That, I have figured out a little too often. Lol! Thank you, I will keep an eye on it. We just changed their food recently.

Boomer loves to sneeze, especially on bare legs or feet.
Bella has always been the grass eater. Seems to work well for her.
I’ve used an ear flush on both of them. Boomer seems to need it more often. He’s also the one that scratches a lot.

That he does. All over my feet I. The morning, haha! Yes, Bella mainly eats the grass, but let’s it all out on our floor 😦 Boomer has started too as well, but not as much. See, I didn’t notice he scratched a lot at first. So I’m thinking something bit him and it was just irritating him. I used some of that spray and that seems to help.
