This Year is all about YOU!

Moms, I decided something. This year is all about us. We do so much for everyone else. We fix meals. We pick out outfits. We drive children to and from various activities. We pack lunches and wipe butts. We pick up toys (multiple times a day). We do laundry and clean and cook and countless other things. We do a LOT. And you know what? Basically none of it has to do with us. And that’s fine most of the time. I think most of us enjoy taking care of our families.

But as I was looking back on 2017, and thinking of all of the ways I cared for my family, one of the things that stood out to me about my year was actually the launch of Just Momming. And outside of having my daughter, it was probably one of my favorite parts of 2017.

Of course there are many reasons for this: I’m doing a project with my best friend, it’s an opportunity to be creative, I’m pursuing and combining my passions of writing and ministering to moms and it’s something that is mine alone (and not my kids’ or family’s). But I think when it comes down to it, this can all fall under one category – self care. I realize how healthy it is for me to take some time for self-care and I plan on doing a lot more of that in 2018.

Just like I plan out time to talk about my son’s day with him after school or have story time with my younger son before nap, I need to make sure I’m planning moments for myself on a regular basis. So guess what? I just scheduled myself a spa day. And I plan on getting my hair done this month. And maybe that seems minor to you, but trust me when I say that for me, this is a big deal. I’m also going to be taking time to wash my face more often and attend kickboxing classes at the Y when I can. Maybe I could learn a new makeup technique.

I realize that I may not be able to do all of this daily and I don’t want to set goals for myself that will be too hard to reach as a mother of young children, but I want to set a goal in general just to take better care of myself. We as mothers convince ourselves that we will get to that later, but let’s be honest. We never do. So I vow today to take better care of myself when I can! A happier, healthier mom who feels good about herself will be an even better mom and caretaker.

I challenge you to do the same! Moms, you are all rockstars. You are! And each and every one of you deserve to have moments that are just about you and about taking care of yourself. Find an inspiring book to read. Splurge on that new face mask you’ve had your eyes on. Take a girls night out with your mama friends. Anything that will help you feel rejuvenated, clean, healthy and happy! We deserve it and it helps us function even better as mothers.

I declare that 2018 is the year for moms!
